Leading is not ordering. Announcing a new policy without explanation or discussion is a good way to alienate your team.
Two groups of followers need your attention. First are those who show the potential to be future leaders, and they deserve your coaching and encouragement. Second are those whose performance is substandard. Ignoring bad employees is a frequent fault of leaders who dislike confrontation and discipline. Yet when poor performances is tolerated, the morale of the whole team will suffer.
While customer focus is obviously valuable, thinking first about customers and never about employees can be dangerous. Customer service is a team effort, and providing that service must involve nearly everyone in your group.
If you have been one of the many leaders who asked people to tighten their belts during tough times, be sure to find ways to reward your team when business improves.
