In ancient military parlance, this was referred to as the 7 Ts, and the idea is still valid. The best managers spend as much time on the warehouse floor as they do behind a desk. Some use 3 x 5 cards with facts about each team member. Favorite hobbies, birthdays, names of spouses and children are entered on each card. This allows the manager to ask about things that are important to each person on the team.
When it is necessary to communicate about change, it is best to explain rather than order or preach. If it is your job to introduce a new program, tell why rather than just how.
Positive feedback is a proven way to strengthen the team. It is better to catch somebody doing right and offer a compliment than to catch somebody doing wrong.
