Contrasting Styles of Leadership

Nearly all leaders embrace one of two styles.

  • The authoritarian exercises the command and control style.
  • When leadership is based on the influence, your focus is to empower others.

If you are an authoritarian, your focus may be on yourself. Leadership based on influence requires extraordinary skill in delegation. If you would empower others, you start by delegating work that your direct reports can successfully accomplish.

Delegation also requires accountability. When you give  jobs to others, you must hold them accountable when results fail to meet expectations. While it may seem easier to be an authoritarian leader, you should consider influence. The influential leader is likely to have greater permanence.
