Most CEOs are great communicators, they write and talk effectively. But very few of us have taken a course in listening, and not all leaders are good listeners.
The expert listener will practice these skills:
- Pay attention. Silence your cell phone or any other distraction, maintain eye contact, and nod to show that you understand.
- Suspend judgment. Even when you disagree, it is better to listen than to argue.
- Repeat and summarize. Repeating is the best way to confirm that you understand the other person and have not missed anything.
- Clarify. Ask questions that allow people to expand their ideas.
