Using scanners to read bar codes is a technology that has been around for many decades. The first application we saw was used by a railroad to identify boxcar numbers.
Ironically, the railroad abandoned scanning because it was nearly impossible to keep the boxcars clean enough codes could be accurately read.
Today, there is a new type of bar code scanner that is image-based. The improved technology reads faster and more accurately than the current scanning method. At a time when identification systems are a critical part of fulfillment warehousing, image-based scanning should have a bright future.
