The pallet was developed soon after the forklift truck as a means of handling and storing cartons and other relatively small freight. Yet pallets are a fire hazard, they are a source of injury, and their weight and size add to the cost of transportation.
The technology to eliminate pallets was introduced decades ago and yet it is still not employed in places where it could be helpful.
Two proven lift truck attachments eliminate the need for pallets. The first is the push-pull attachment, which allows the unit load to rest on a sheet of fiberboard called a slip sheet. Slip sheets are inexpensive and their weight and cubic displacement are insignificant. The second attachment is the carton clamp, which handles unit loads by grabbing them from the sides.
These are just two of several systems that allow pallets to be eliminated. |
