The first step is to eliminating micromanagement is to recognize that it is a habit that borders on addiction. You must stop yourself from micromanaging by starting the process of delegating projects, and forcing yourself to stand aside until the project is completed.
The second step is to be certain that you can trust your team of direct reports. If there is anyone on that team that you don’t trust, changes are necessary. You cannot delegate projects to people that you do not trust.
The third step is to begin the process of delegation. The process starts by going to the delegatee and clearly defining what you expect. That person must know what success feels like. As you delegate, be certain that you have provided totally clear instructions about how the job should be completed and a channel to ask questions or get help in the process.
Finally, one way to overcome nervousness about delegation is to set up a procedure of audits on every project with an independent auditor who will report any sign that the project is not on track.
