Beware the Hindrance Trap

Nearly all employees think their bosses hinder their effectiveness once in a while. But when the hindrance is prevalent, everyone suffers.

Let’s consider how it works in warehouses:

Joe has been promoted from worker to line supervisor. As a leader, he believes it’s his job to leave the details to others. Not recognizing the danger, he ignores reasonable capacity limits. He starts driving rather than leading, making the lives of his work crew unnecessarily difficult. In the best of times, Joe will realize that he is caught in a trap, and he will spend more time with his crew to discover ways to make their jobs easier. He will use positive feedback to let his people know that he cares about them and appreciates their good work.

Of course this happens with office jobs as well as warehouse work, as many leaders fail to recognize that good people perform better when they see their boss as a coach rather than a dictator. As a leader, the challenge is to improve your self-awareness before falling into the hindrance trap. If you are already in the trap, self-awareness is necessary in order to escape.
