Conventional management wisdom says that people without close supervision will waste time. Yet because of the Covid pandemic that began in 2020, today a growing number of information handlers are working from home, and without close supervision. If you are concerned about their efficiency, here are some questions that you might ask:
- Have you re-evaluated the process of the work you are asking your people to do?
- Do they know what is expected of them?
- Does everyone know how their work will be measured and evaluated?
- Have you clearly defined systems, tasks, and continuity of work?
- Have you focused on the right incentives to motivate your information handlers to work their hardest?
- How might the work vary? What's controllable and what is not?
- How well have your managers adapted to the distributed work environment?
- Have you researched and documented best practices for leadership in this virtual workplace?
- What can you do now that you couldn't do before? Have you documented the improvements?
- Do you have the right people in your bus? Are they in the right seats? How do you know?
- If you face the need for furloughs or layoffs, do you know who you should keep? How do you know? How do you find out?
