In most organizations, there are at least three kinds of communicators: the specialists, the managers, and the leaders.
The specialist communicates technical expertise as well as substantial knowledge of products and ser- vices. Completion deadlines and warranties are also the product of specialists.
The manager is concerned with financial planning, inventory processes, budget cycles, command & control, as well as counting & reporting. The corporate leader communicates a coherent vision, as well as work values and principles.
The corporate leader will challenge and empower the team. The leader also serves as coach and mentor.
Recognize that there are times when the specialist, the manager and the corporate leader are speaking different languages. The specialist is fixed on communication of data. The manager emphasizes processes and control. In contrast, the leader expresses vi- sion and values.
All three are important, but there may be times when they don’t communicate well with each other.
