A century ago, being a housewife was a full-time job. Monday was washing day, Tuesday was the day for clothes to be hung out to dry, and cooking was a big job every day of theweek. Technology has eliminatedmost of the time and energy engaged in housekeeping, but lack of housework has not caused anyone to be unemployed.
Using a typewriter to prepare reports and correspondence was a major office activity a century ago, but we have never encountered any unemployed typists.
When one job is eliminated by technology, it seems that there is at least one new job to take its place. Furthermore, the new job is usually less strenuous and more rewarding than the one that was eliminated. Consider seven kinds of automation found in warehouses today:
- Conveyors
- Automatic storage and retrieval systems
- Pick-to-light systems
- Voice picking
- Sortation systems
- Robots
- Drones
Have you heard of anyone whose job was eliminated by any of this technology?
