There is the ancient story about the man who was watching two workers on a construction job. He asked the first what he was doing, and the answer was “I’m cutting stone.” But when he asked the second, that worker responded “I’m building a cathedral.”
Bain is a large consulting firm that examined the attitudes of thousands of workers about their motivations.
Their study identifies six different types:
- “Pioneers” are people who believe they are on a mission to change the world.
- “Artisans” are only interested in mastering a specific skill.
- “Operators” get a sense of meaning from their life outside the workplace.
- “Strivers” are focused on pay and status.
- “Givers” want their work to always improve the lives of others.
- “Explorers” are seeking out new experiences.
How do the people in your warehouse feel about the work they are doing? If you don’t know, would it make sense to ask them?
