Five Characteristics
of Great Leaders

Warren Buffett’s advice on hiring people is worthy of close attention:

While many definitions of leadership are constantly proposed, these attracted me as particularly interesting.

Flexibility is first. Managers who are set in their ways and unwilling to embrace change will eventually forfeit their leadership position.

Communication is next. Some leaders are orators, others are great writers, and some are simply highly skilled at persuasion. In every case, leaders have extraordinary ability to connect with their followers.

Courage, or just plain guts, is an essential quality of leadership. People who live in fear cannot survive in a leadership role.

Humility is a necessary characteristic. Good leaders are great listeners, and listening requires the need to accept blame.

Responsibility is the fifth characteristic. Are you willing to be held responsible for failures as well as the successes? Before the Normandy invasion, Eisenhower wrote a letter to be published if the invasion failed but never had to use it, perhaps because of his other characteristics.
