The fact that robots in the warehouse have become far more prevalent is obvious. The reason for the spread of robotics is not always well explained.
Reason number one is a reduction in cost. Industrial robots have been around since the middle of the last century, primarily used in manufacturing. In recent years, the monthly cost of leasing a warehouse robot has fallen below the cost of hiring a person. Therefore if a robot can replace a person, the cost justification is clear-cut.
Reason number two is that there is a severe shortage of human labor in many parts of the developed world.
Reason number three is that robots are far more flexible than conveyors. The robots can move from one building to another, and they can move all over a building without investing in guided pathways.
Reason number four is that robots are now more capable than a few years ago. The earliest machines were only justified by reduction of travel. They carried merchandise from one place to another and greatly reduced travel by humans. The newest machines are equipped with a crane-like arm with a gripper that is capable of grasping cartons and moving them.
Reason number five is a combination of the first four. Today’s warehouse robot costs less than a person, and it greatly reduces human travel. It not only carries product but also grabs it and places it in a different spot.
While automation was perceived as a threat in the early history of manufacturing, it is certainly no threat in the full employment we have in today’s economy.
